As soon as our holiday Gardein roast and leftover sweet potato casserole are tucked away in the refrigerator, the Christmas movies begin. Bryan and I have a list of films that we systematically work through every year. And it’s a great list, one that includes Love Actually, While You Were Sleeping, The Family Stone, The Holiday, You’ve Got Mail, Christmas with the Kranks, The Santa Claus, Jingle All the Way…and the very best of them all, White Christmas. It doesn’t get any better than blue-eyed Bing Crosby, gangly comic Danny Kaye, the stunning Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen’s high kicks and mesmerizing dance moves, right?
Well, we decided to kick it up a notch this year. Last night, Bryan and I went to see a production of White Christmas onstage at the Spreckels Theater downtown. Backed by a twenty-piece orchestra, led by incredibly talented actors with San Diego Musical Theatre, and complete with a “snowy” finale (I’m pretty they shot mild cleaning solution out of canons that drifted down to tickle our noses), it was every bit as good as the movie. And the perfect way to kick off the holiday.
May your days be merry and bright, my friends. And may all your Christmases be white.
