Every year, Bryan and I take a day off from work to celebrate each other’s birthday. We devote that day to whatever the other person wants to do to celebrate around revolution around the sun. These birthday adventures generally involve great food, new experiences, and a touch of geekery.
This year, Bryan requested we check out the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla on his birthday. Birch is a small but mighty aquarium that features some incredible sea life, great exhibits on topics like global warming and scientific expeditions in the ocean, and tide pools that overlook the Pacific and provide you a hands-on experience (I touched a sea cucumber!).
As we walked through the exhibits, Bryan and I rediscovered our shared fascination for sea life. We found ourselves trying to identify the listed species with the actual animal in the tank. And there was this great sense of calm and serenity.
Visiting Birch was a beautiful reminder of how lucky we are to live by the ocean and a great way to spend Bryan’s birthday!
